- The first difference is the paddle, with a canoe we use a simple paddle, a stick with on one side a handle (called olive) and on the other a blade. The practitioner must alternate the side where he paddles by inverting his hands, we can find this practice in other sports which also need a simple paddle like the pirogue or the Stand Up Paddle. Conversely, in a kayak, the kayaker has a double paddle with a blade at both ends of the stick. He may have a higher paddle frequency.
- The second difference is the position. The practitioner is on his knees on the boat, this position gives him more height for a better reading of the river and better anticipation in the rapids of the river. However the kayaker is seated and has a foot clip to give him a better transmission of energy from his upper body to the boat.
- The origin of canoeing is Native American. Generally built from a wooden structure, it has a central role in people’s daily lives. Indeed it was used for hunting, fishing, war but also for moving. This boat was very easy to manipulate and light which also made it fragile. The term »canoe » comes from Spanish canoa, it itself comes from the Arawak Ka-no-a language, which means »floats on water ».
- For is part, kayak is a heritage from Inuits who used wood or cetaceans bones to built the shape of the boat and covered it with seal skins. This heritage of the people of the Arctic is omnipresent, the current form of the kayak does not have any real evolution, just like the paddle. It is mainly the materials like polyethylene and composites which equip most of the current boats.The term kayak means in Inuit language « hunting boat« , it was used only for hunting and fishing.
